Biographical Statement:
Dr. Jürgen Pfister has taken over the position of chief economist at BayernLB in Munich as of June 1, 2003. Previously, he was head of economic research at Commerzbank in Frankfurt from January 1987 to May 2003. From 1980 to 1986, he was a staff member of the Council of Economic Experts ("Five Wise Men"). In 1986, he spent six months working at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington. Dr. Pfister studied economics at the University of Kiel and was awarded his degree in 1976. He obtained his doctorate in 1979 with a thesis on inflation theory at the University of Paderborn. Since 1994, Dr. Pfister has been on the board The European Money and Finance Forum (SUERF); from 2000 to 2006 he acted as Vice President. Dr. Pfister serves as a Sherpa, representing the BayernLB at the IFD (Initiative Finanzstandort Deutschland), an action group for the German financial sector, and at the Munich Financial Center Initiative. He is a member of the Advisory Board (Kuratorium) of the ifo Institut and the Bayerische Finanzzentrum. Dr. Pfister is also active on two federal expert commissions of the economic affairs council (Wirtschaftsrat), an independent advisory body close to the Christian Democratic Party (CDU). He belongs to a number of other national and international organisations.
