Chetan Ahya is Morgan Stanley’s Chief Economist and Global Head of Economics, based in New York. He joined the firm in 2000 and has 26 years of experience in macroeconomic research. As Chief Economist, Chetan is responsible for framing the firm’s views on the global business cycle. In 2020, he highlighted two key out-of-consensus calls: (1) the 2020 recession will be sharper but shorter than during the Global Financial Crisis and the global recovery will be V-shaped; and (2) COVID-19 has unleashed forces that will lead to higher inflation in this cycle, notably renewed fiscal policy activism and closer scrutiny of tech, trade, and titans. Chetan’s thematic research focuses on global growth dynamics, particularly the interplay of the leverage cycle and long-term global growth drivers – demographics and productivity.
